Underground Construction

From open-cut trenching to complex horizontal directional drilling, Axiom Fiber Optics's underground construction teams build the buried infrastructure that fiber networks depend on — built to last, built to spec, built on time.

Complete Underground Fiber Infrastructure

Underground construction is the backbone of any fiber optic network. Whether you're building a new greenfield route, extending an existing network, or rehabilitating aging infrastructure, Axiom Fiber Optics has the equipment, crews, and experience to deliver.

We operate across urban, suburban, and rural environments — navigating congested utility corridors in city centers and covering long rural backbone routes with equal proficiency. Every job begins with thorough site assessment, utility locating, and permit coordination before a single shovel breaks ground.

Trenching & Open-Cut Construction

Open-cut trenching remains the most cost-effective method for many underground fiber installations. Our crews use track-mounted trenchers and excavators sized to match the job — from narrow 4-inch slots for single conduit to wide trenches supporting multiple duct banks. We handle shoring, dewatering, bedding, conduit placement, and engineered backfill in one continuous workflow.

  • Narrow-cut trenching (4" to 12" widths)
  • Wide-cut trench for multi-duct bank systems
  • Engineered sand bedding and select backfill
  • Concrete encasement where required
  • Full pavement restoration — asphalt and concrete
  • HDPE, PVC, and HDPE-DB conduit installation

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)

When open cut isn't an option — under highways, waterways, railroads, or sensitive surfaces — horizontal directional drilling is our go-to method. Our HDD crews operate a fleet of drill rigs ranging from compact units for tight urban corridors to large-diameter rigs for long crossings and major highway bores.

Every HDD crossing begins with a designed bore path, appropriate drill fluid management, and certified operators who understand the stakes of working beneath high-traffic infrastructure.

  • Mini, midi, and maxi HDD rig fleet
  • Highway, railroad, and waterway crossings
  • Conduit diameters from 1" to 6"
  • Bore lengths up to 2,000 feet per crossing
  • Drill fluid recycling and containment
  • Bore path verification and documentation

Conduit Systems & Duct Banks

We design and install conduit systems built for today's fiber counts and tomorrow's capacity demands. Our duct bank installations include proper spacers, warning tape, tracer wire, and manhole/hand hole terminations that simplify future fiber installation and maintenance.

  • Single and multi-way HDPE conduit systems
  • Innerduct and micro-duct installation
  • Conduit mandrel testing prior to cable installation
  • Tracer wire and warning tape installation
  • End cap sealing and conduit documentation

Vaults, Hand Holes & Manholes

Access structures are critical to long-term network maintainability. Axiom Fiber Optics installs precast concrete vaults, polymer hand holes, and traffic-rated manholes to the exact specifications required by your network design and local utility requirements.

  • Precast concrete vault installation
  • Polymer and composite hand hole placement
  • Traffic-rated H-20 lids and frames
  • Custom vault configurations to engineer spec
  • Riser and bracket installation

Project Scale

Our underground construction crews handle projects from single-site laterals to multi-county backbone builds exceeding 100 route miles. We self-perform all construction activities and do not broker work — every crew on your project is a Axiom Fiber Optics employee.
